The Secret Diary of Mrs. John Quincy Adams: Wife of the Sixth President of the United States by Beatrice Cayzer takes us into the life of our sixth president, John Quincy Adams, who married the lovely English born Louisa Johnson after a two-year-long engagement. During that two years, he actually tried to get out of marrying Louisa who, at 22, was considered a spinster and her dowry was shady at best. He couldn't get out of the marriage and the two would be married for 50 years, enduring the ups and downs of life as they came, but they were connected in some important ways. Both of them were horrified by slavery, and on this common footing they were able to find love after so many years.
This is a wonderful story and you can truly feel the voice of Louisa through her own diary as you read. While it is fiction, you do truly feel as if Beatrice Cayzer has found Louisa's voice and it makes things feel authentic and real. Louisa is a strong voice and it comes through as you read. This is a period of history that I love and it often gets overlooked for better known presidents and their wives. Do not miss out on this book if you want to be entertained, and love a good bit of history that has some fun but suitable fiction attached. This was a great read and I would love to read more by this author.
