The Secret in the Compost Bin by Margaret Pearce must be one of the loveliest children's books I've read in a while. It is the story of a boy who would like nothing more than either having friends over to his place or a pet. The first he can't have because he and his parents moved into a new house and having friends over brings the danger of ruined carpets, scratch marks on the drive or trampled plants. The latter would cost money, no matter how small. And money is very tight in the house. Kate, Jeremy's cousin, gives him a mystery egg and Jeremy hides it in the family's compost bin. Kate says that he can hatch his own secret pet and Jeremy eagerly starts to help his family with the compost - so that nobody would find his secret. The egg hatches, but the animal is nothing like Jeremy or Kate have ever seen. And it grows bigger and bigger and bigger! Will the secret pet turn out to be more trouble than they expected?

I might be an adult, but even so I read books for younger readers every now and then because they often have more magic, charm, and hope in them than books for "grown ups." This little book is one of the books I would recommend if you need something to cheer you up - no matter how old or young you are. I think that parents would also have a great time if they read The Secret in the Compost Bin by Margaret Pearce together with their children!

This book was a very nice read - funny in parts, a bit sad in others. It engaged my mind and I could vividly imagine the characters and the secret pet during their adventures!
