The Sorcerer’s Apprentice: (Book 2, Merlin Chronicles) is a terrific fantasy by Daniel Diehl. Her Evilness, Morgana le Fey, believes Merlin and archaeologist Jason Carpenter perished in her trap, but they are using an ointment to stay invisible from her scrying mirror. They watch Morgana and her minions go to her secret lair, the Hellfire caves. The caves have a hidden gate Morgana intends to open, unleashing the demon dragons she made a deal with to destroy humankind. Merlin and Beverley, Jason’s girlfriend, return to the caves to locate the gate, but they become entangled in Morgana’s deadly vines. Meanwhile, Jason travels to Ethiopia to visit the Coptic Church where valuable artefacts needed for their mission are stored in the Ark of the Covenant, which is forbidden to the public. Unfortunately, his luggage containing the invisible ointment is lost and furious Morgana spots him in her mirror.

Readers who have not yet read the first book in the series will get the chance to catch up because Daniel Diehl includes a well-informed prologue in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice: (Book 2, Merlin Chronicles.) The story is a fascinating one. I liked the trip Jason took to Ethiopia and think the information about the Hellfire caves and the drama that takes place there is very good. Morgana never ceases to astound me with her heartless, selfish personality, which the author obviously spent time developing to devious perfection. Witty Merlin cannot resist performing cool, questionable tricks while he adjusts to modern times. The conclusion was unexpected but quite impressive.
