The Space Between Us by Susan Reimer explores themes of family, friendship, loss, and self-discovery. The story follows Abby Kennedy, a young girl navigating life on her aunt and uncle’s farm after the tragic loss of her parents. Her bond with her horse, Marigold, becomes a source of comfort and strength, especially when Marigold goes missing, setting off a chain of events that challenge Abby’s relationships and her sense of identity. The novel also highlights the importance of friendship as Abby learns to trust and rely on others, including her best friend, Nora, and Jed, a new boy in town with a surprising connection to her past.

Susan Reimer creates a compelling story that follows the emotional journey of a young girl as she faces grief and the challenges of growing up. The rural setting of Poplar Creek is vividly portrayed, and the depiction of Abby’s bond with Marigold is especially moving, emphasizing the healing power of animals and nature. The story is filled with moments of reflection and growth, as Abby learns to confront her fears and accept the love and support of those around her. The resolution of the mystery concerning Marigold’s disappearance is powerful, tying together the themes of trust and redemption. The Space Between Us is an inspiring story that will appeal to middle-grade readers who enjoy tales of personal growth, family bonds, and the special connection between humans and animals. It’s a beautifully written book that leaves readers with a sense of hope and the reminder that even in the face of loss, love and support can help us find our way.
