The Spirits of '76 by T. W. Fitzhugh is the first book in the Spirits of the Revolution series. The Battle of Brooklyn, the largest battle in the American Revolutionary War, is drawing near. Just 11 years old, Emmeline is fed up with other people using her power to see into the future, and she’s gone on the run. The British Loyalists are hot on her trail, knowing they could use her ability to help them win the war. She thinks she’s safe when she hides in a schoolhouse, but the schoolmaster wants to use her abilities for the independence cause, too. Emmeline cannot see anything but defeat for Washington, though. She can’t change what she sees, and her visions always come to pass. Can she change the war’s outcome and history, or are her visions destined to become reality?

What a fun story for a preteen audience! The Spirits of '76 by T. W. Fitzhugh is a wonderful reimagining of an important historical battle. It’s a magical adventure story with thrilling, well-developed characters, the three primary ones being children with unique gifts who get together to try to change what’s looking like a dead cert. Historical fact is woven seamlessly into an incredibly creative plot that will delight readers young and old, and it’s a lovely way to learn a little bit of history. The premise is unique, and readers will love the action on every page and the setting of colonial New York. It’s engaging and fast-paced as the start of a thrilling series. Highly recommended reading for all ages, not just the target audience.
