Sometimes, second chances can be cathartic, and sometimes they cause more pain. Cameron Lane’s The Squaring of a Heart is sprinkled with romance and centered on coming home, fighting for what matters, and discovering that second chances often appear when you least expect them. Coming back to Marigold isn’t just a trip down memory lane for Sophie Caldwell—it’s her way of keeping a promise to her dying mother to revive the worn-out town square. After initially clashing with Cal Bennett, a single father who’s fiercely protective of his hometown, they soon decide that working together to heal old wounds, small-town gossip, and the difficult task of revitalizing a place that has lost all hope is what’s best for the town. The Squaring of a Heart is a personal, emotional story about being resilient, feeling like you belong, how to restore trust, and unexpectedly finding a home—the kind of second chance that changes everything.

The cover of The Squaring of a Heart by Cameron Lane instantly caught my attention, and after reading the description, I knew I had to read it. I was pulled in from the very first page, and felt like I was right there in Marigold with Sophie, Cal, and the rest of the townspeople. There’s also a nice balance between the serious moments and the ones that make you smile. What I loved most were the interesting and authentic characters that were introduced. Sophie is strong but still figuring things out, while Cal is the quiet, steady one you root for. Even the minor characters felt like people I might meet in real life. They laugh, struggle, grow, and heal in ways that are so genuinely relatable. The themes of hope, forgiveness, and community are woven seamlessly throughout, making the story both uplifting and deeply meaningful.
