The Stag Lord (Bannerman Boru) by Darby Kaye follows Bannerman Boru and his young son, Cormac, as they travel across the country in a camper van, trying to escape the ancient Celtic god Cernunnos. A member of the Tuatha De Danann clan, he has been shunned by his people and must try to protect his eight-year-old son himself. After Cormac is injured, he meets Shay, another clan member who is a Healer. She and her family, along with her dog Max, invite Bann and his son into their homes and offer to fight alongside him. As Cernunnos' attacks grow more violent, Bann realises he must face and defeat the god himself if his family is ever going to be safe.

Darby Kaye has brought the ancient and the modern together in The Stag Lord (Bannerman Boru). As immortals, the clan members have lived for centuries, but the story is set in the modern day. Bann is still 'old school' in the way he acts. He has been left with the job of protecting his son, but is still trying to figure out how to raise him too. While it is a fantasy novel, the creatures are woven into the story so well that you believe they could really exist. Shay is a loner but soon falls for Bann and his son. A warrior too, she can hold her own in a fight. The first book in the series, The Stag Lord, ends on a cliff-hanger and I’m looking forward to the sequel.
