The Star-Crossed Empire by Maya Darjani is a fascinating romantic space opera. Layla Kamil, a Republic soldier, never thought that the love of her life, Ignatius Kurestin, who recently became the Emperor of Valhar, would ask her to marry him again. Years ago, they were both responsible for the cooperation pact that catapulted their two superpowers into actual allies, and they fell helplessly in love with each other. However, a war threatens to break out between her two homes. Now Layla has technically dual citizenship and is bound by oaths that govern her life. Yet the duality of her loyalty between her birth nation and her adopted home bothers her. She doesn't want to be forever torn between two worlds. Duty or love? She feels unsafe and threatened while tensions rise between the two worlds. Therefore, she must find a solution to somehow end the war and commit to one loyalty.

The Star-Crossed Empire is an excellent science fiction novel featuring dual loyalty, dual timelines, battles, court intrigue, slow-burn romance, politics, and space opera adventure. Maya Darjani has written a clever, rich, and complex story where love and duty collide unexpectedly. This story draws you into a web of intrigue and emotion and makes you root for well-thought-out characters and admire the integrity of the heroine. I loved how the story unfolded, the non-stop action, and the engaging, intrigue-filled plot. This novel will appeal to science fiction fans who crave a well-crafted tale that transcends time with a heroine torn between two worlds and duty and love but set to achieve a balance between love and family, ambition, integrity, faith, and political belief.
