The Measure of Enough by Deonna Kay is a profoundly moving and devastating story. When she was a little girl, Kacee Robinson and her father made a pact always to keep the secrets between them. Now, at thirty-four years old, Kacee runs a nonprofit agency helping victims of abuse. One day, she receives a phone call from her mother's best friend, asking her to return to her hometown of Glendale, Texas, to see her mother. Kacee still feels anger toward her mother, as she believes that she was a terrible mom, that she broke up their family, and that she abandoned Kacee when she needed her most. Kacee must choose between continuing her life as it is, haunted by the past and unanswered questions, or returning to the town to face her fears, her past, and her mother, and uncover the truth about her childhood. Is Kacee prepared to learn and face the truth?
The Measure of Enough is an extraordinary story of domestic and sexual abuse, mental health struggles, grooming tactics, repressed memories, and more. It has much realism and depth, telling the story of a daughter who pieces her mother's life together through journals, learns terrifying family secrets, and ultimately finds understanding and the courage to lay a new foundation for herself. This remarkably engrossing novel delves into the complexities of a mother-daughter relationship and family secrets while also exploring the idea that our past does not define us, but it does shape us. I highly recommend it, as Deonna Kay portrays a revelatory journey through the missing parts of one's story and the assumptions that might forever change the trajectory of a relationship.
