The Star Thrower by Kathleen Welton is a fast-paced mystery about three young graduates who are best friends. Sam, Leo, and Ava are uncertain about the career paths they want to pursue, so they decide to take an impromptu trip to Bali. They hope this trip will guide their futures, which it does in unexpected ways. Upon their return home, the trio becomes embroiled in a legal battle after discovering toxins in the water at their local beach. Their journey throughout the battle is full of twists and turns. By the end of the book, Ava, Leo, and Sam have made progress in their original quest for direction concerning their careers.

Readers who appreciate non-violent mysteries and who are passionate about the environment will appreciate The Star Thrower. I was drawn into the story immediately and had a hard time putting it down. As I read, I appreciated Kathleen Welton’s descriptive skills and how she made the technical parts of the legal proceedings understandable. Despite the book being fiction, I could imagine the circumstances the trio found themselves in happening in real life. Another thing I liked about this book was its emphasis on fresh college graduates making a change. It’s an important reminder not to look down on anyone’s abilities because they are young or inexperienced. The Star Thrower could easily be part of a high school or university curriculum for the life lessons it portrays. Overall, I enjoyed this book and am glad I took the time to read it.
