The Summerlark Elf is a story that starts off with a human couple adopting an orphaned newborn elf, in a land that has a mistrust of faerie folk and arcane magic. The couple hides her elfin ears and raises the baby girl on their farm. When Enna's adopted father takes her to the annual market 20 years later, she is reacquainted with an old Dwarf friend who gave her a necklace a few years back. A mission to find the missing elf child of twenty years ago has been given to a pair of mercenaries, a thief and a bard that are hired to find her for an unknown purpose. While at the market, one thing leads to another with all involved being captured during a ruckus. They find themselves thrown into the dungeon. Without knowing who each other is, the group is separated and divided into pairs. They are forced to rely on each other so that they can escape and get back to their own pursuits.
Brandon Draga does a stellar job of mixing likeable characters with shady scoundrels that become unlikely heroes. The characters are involved in a chaotic dance of intrigue with a sense of humor that runs throughout their attempts to escape. Combine that with Brandon's use of cliff-hangers and you will be left wanting more after you have finished turning the pages. The Summerlark Elf is the first in a four-part saga. I cannot wait for the second book. Brava! Mr. Draga.
