Soo-A is a beautiful girl whose name means "perfect lotus flower" in Korean. But Soo-A is unhappy with her appearance. She would rather have red curls, like her friend Juliette, instead of her black hair. She dreams of having the sparkling blue eyes of her friend Daniel, and not dark ones with almond shape. One day, Ms. Garcia the art teacher asked the children to draw portraits of themselves as having superpowers. Soo-A chose shape-shifting to become anyone she desires and even to talk to her dog, Mr. Pickles. Strangely enough, her wish came true and Soo-A became a shape-shifter. Will she be happy with her choice? The Superpower of Being Yourself by Eliana Jeong is a motivational read for children from 3 to 8 years of age.

Eliana Jeong's The Superpower of Being Yourself is a fascinating and meaningful book for kids who feel insecure because of their different appearances or cultural heritage. Eliana puts Soo-A, a sensitive young girl with a vivid imagination, into a fantasy that can become a trap. Soo-A learns an important lesson and returns after her adventure empowered and stronger. This is a relevant tale that teachers and psychologists working with children will appreciate. Eliana uses Korean words for Mom (Umma), Dad (Abba), and Grandmother (Hal-me), enriching the vocabulary of her young readers. The author included translations for these words in the book. Christina Smith's vibrant illustrations make Soo-A's magical world come alive and demonstrate a bright visual part of the amazing Korean culture to young readers.
