Holly M. Jenkins’ The Swan’s Arrow is a fairytale-themed story that enthralled me with its magic and thematic development. Princess Odette loses her mother to a terrifying curse. Now she is bound by duty to marry the one person she detests, Prince Derek, whose seemingly likeable demeanor hides darker secrets. Ren is an accursed sorcerer and the villain spoken about in tragic tales of magic, and not the kind of person anyone wants to be close to. A beast attack will change everything, bringing Odette and Ren together. With a common enemy, they ally, and the bond between them deepens. With secrets coming out and the kingdom facing unprecedented darkness, can they beat the enemy, and will love be another curse that unleashes their darker natures or a path to healing?

The Swan’s Arrow is a fantastic read. I loved the atmospheric world that Holly M. Jenkins has created, a world full of magic, especially dark magic. My mind was flooded with images of enchanted castles and dangerous woods, of celestial blood moons and shadowed mazes. The conflict is expertly handled, mirroring the proverbial conflict of light versus darkness. The author uses this conflict to create suspense, making you guess which side each character belongs to. Characters dazzle on the pages, each of them feeling real. Odette was my favorite, struggling with grief and facing difficult choices about love and her destiny. I enjoyed how cleverly the author creates a sense of longing and dread in the characters. The premonitions are skillfully written, the tension growing from page to page, and the plot is unpredictable.
