Dark prophecies, mysterious heroes, and a savior who might be the only thing standing between the depths of hell and those of the light. The Sybilline Prophecy: Lavender's Quest has all of this and more. Carol Linn has created a short, yet powerful novella about prophecy, past, and finding what's right. Lavender is a young woman, a child still really, who is born to the gifted race of those that possess powerful forces - some say magic. In Lavender's people's religion, Sacred Sophia will save the world from an evil being. The scribes believe that Sophia has been reincarnated, and that there are five possible contenders for the role: one of which is Lavender. However, an evil sorceress is trying to steal the powers of the reincarnate, and now Lavender must go on the run. It's a race to see if Lavender can make it to the testing grounds or if the sorceress will find them and steal whatever powers she may possess.
I'm a big fan of ancient curses, and especially the mythology and world building that goes into creating a believable fantasy piece like this one. While The Sybilline Prophecy is shorter than most, there is a lot of world building and creative mythology placed into the text, which I loved. The mark of a great book is when the plot itself is laced with back story, with history, so that you have a complex, multi-layered story with lots of moving parts. While the plot was relatively simple, there was a lot of substance for such a short piece, particularly for the character depth and complexity. Lavender was a person that you really empathized with and I hope that I get to see more of her journey in future books to come!
