What if a dog could be taken to new places just by wagging its tail? In The Tales of Charlie Wags: European Christmas Adventure by Sofie Wells and Ali Barclay, young readers are taken on a journey along with a cheerful pup, Charlie, as he celebrates festive celebrations around Europe. With each joyful wag, Charlie visits Amsterdam’s sparkling canals, Brussels’ golden squares and tasty waffles, and discovers enchanting Christmas markets in Munich in addition to other adventures in the continent’s famous cities. Every city sparkles with holiday cheer, inviting Charlie to discover festive wonders and joyful surprises in each new place. The colorful illustrations by Sanna Sjöström brightly show the joy of Christmas across Europe for children and their families. This story blends travel, holiday magic, and the coziness of family.
From an educator’s perspective, reading The Tales of Charlie Wags by Sofie Wells and Ali Barclay is an engaging way to spark children’s curiosity about different places and holiday traditions from around the world. It’ll be an excellent classroom read-aloud during the December holiday season and can initiate conversations on what each child’s family does at that time of year. Children will also enjoy the cheerful rhyming of the story and will have fun pointing out which words sound the same, reinforcing and supporting literacy development. Sanna Sjöström’s vibrant artwork does more than complement the text. Each illustration enhances the magic of the story, allowing children to feel like they’re experiencing the sparkle of Amsterdam’s canals or the cozy glow of Munich’s markets with Charlie. Together, the words and images create a joyful read that encourages both learning and wonder.
