The Time Between Blinks is a remarkable fantasy by talented author Russell Chappell. The story takes us to California, where we meet twenty-three-year-old Ethan Weghorst. It’s been four months since Ethan graduated from college, but he is still trying to figure out what he will do next. His mom, Jennifer, a hospital nurse, keeps nudging him to get a grip on his life, but her nudges distance Ethan from her. Derrick, his father, an accountant, cushions the pressure with logic and gentle advice, but it fails to help. Suddenly, Ethan feels like reality has cracked and time moves uncontrollably, leaving him behind. A voice tells him that it is the curse - it makes time move faster when he blinks, and he cannot stop time, but he can learn to control himself within it. But will Ethan overcome the curse? And what lessons will he learn trying?
What a delightful treasure trove of wisdom! Russell Chappell’s The Time Between Blinks is a rare book I read in one sitting from start to end. Perfectly written at just the right pace and conveying Ethan’s feelings and thoughts, this story captivated me instantly. I liked how Ethan’s relationship with his parents was portrayed and how it evolved through the story. Every chapter offered lessons to learn and thought-provoking dilemmas to reflect on. One of my favorites was that a direction in life does not require certainty. I also liked the array of thoughts that Ethan’s idea about working at a coffee shop and his mother’s reaction triggered in me. I highly recommend this praiseworthy, must-read story to young adults seeking a direction in life and their parents.
