After the wreckage of their merchant ship, Desert Rain and Gabriel, together with their companions, are rescued by Woasim, a Wind Hijn. But three of their crew members, the Vermin brothers, are missing. Following Desert Rain’s insights, the group, joined by Woasim, heads North, where they not only believe the Distortionist, a malevolent force, is holding his captives, but also hope to win the snow elves as their allies. The snow elves possess the legendary Lightscale, the only weapon that can stop the Distortionist, also called Katawa. However, as the group makes its way North, they run into the Bloodburn clan, one of the three Wretched courts, and are also held captive. Will they survive what the Bloodburn clan has in store for them and accomplish their mission? Find out in The Trial of the Cursed Wanderer: Book Three of the Scales Seekers by A. R. Cook.

If you’re looking for a grim, epic fantasy novel flavored with action, adventure, mythical lore, and suspense, The Trial of the Cursed Wanderer by A. R. Cook is a great pick. Balancing between high-stakes action and intricate, expansive world-building, Cook unravels the intriguing plot at a rapid pace. I loved how this kept me on my toes, following the well-crafted, fascinating, dynamic, and richly diverse cast as they were hurled from one crisis into another. Throughout their struggles, Cook highlights their incredible growth, which, alongside the unexpected revelations, added a layer of unpredictability to their arcs and the storyline. Desert Rain is initially reluctant to accept her powers and, consequently, her responsibilities, as she lacks confidence in her ability to wield them. But with every clash and confrontation, she gets bolder and more decisive, embracing her magic and role in the fight against the dark forces. This page turner is a standalone read.
