The Two Lives of Eddie Kovacs by Michael Nemeth begins in the wake of personal tragedy when retired and recently widowed Karl Novak finds himself entangled in a new undercover assignment orchestrated by an ambitious sheriff. Adopting his former identity as Eddie Kovacs, Karl delves into the world of Palm Haven, a prestigious condo community on Tybee Island, to investigate a string of suspicious overdoses. However, complications arise as the DEA already has an operative undercover, and a vengeful CIA agent from Eddie's past resurfaces, fueling the stakes. With time running out and everything he holds dear at risk, Eddie must unravel the mystery swiftly to protect the people and connections he has grown to cherish.
Michael Nemeth really goes the whole length in every way in The Two Lives of Eddie Kovacs. I was a bit blown away by the emotional depth I was confronted with, and the capacity for the rawest grief to transcend the page. As someone who has experienced this level of pain, trust me, Nemeth nails it. Karl/Eddie is a relatable and resilient protagonist and the poor guy just cannot stop the hits from coming. Thankfully, he's sharp, experienced, and capable, things that come in handy when nobody else seems to have as much riding on surviving the assignment as Eddie does. The pace races at a steady clip that's filled with endless twists and high tension. The settings are visually depicted, and with a wide net of characters, Nemeth's plotting and emotionally resonant mystery will leave readers guessing until the very end. Now give us more. Very highly recommended.
