“You cannot teach what you do not know. You cannot know what you never learned.” Time and experience can be the best teachers, but it takes a willingness to learn. The Two Olive Martini, a novel by Lance T. Weil, is a perfect example of learning and growth. The story follows Gail, a kindhearted oncology nurse who is unhappily married to a parasitic man named Dick, who also happens to be one. Gail dreams about her first love and ex-husband, Sean, a man who cheated his way out of their beautiful marriage and friendship. Unfortunately, Sean is now married to a gold-digging woman named Ashley, whose strongest talent is spending the money that others earn. When circumstances bring Sean and Gail together, a unique opportunity arises for them to restore the happiness that has been missing from both of their lives. However, no one said it would be easy.

Amusing, slightly quirky, and entertaining, The Two Olive Martini by Lance T. Weil is fundamentally a story about second chances. The plot revolves around a middle-aged couple who, despite being divorced, have never really stopped loving one another and realize that when you stop smiling, life isn't much fun. Themes of growth, empathy, and learning from mistakes play a significant role in the plot, creating a tone of hope throughout the novel. Skillfully crafted characters who grow and mature are relatable and easy to root for, while others are utterly sleazy. The pacing is brisk for a novel in this genre, featuring commutes by Cessna, drinking binges, and some raunchy scenes. Overall, it is a believable contemporary tale that left me grinning.

The Two Olive Martini by Lance T. Weil tells the tale of Gail and Sean, a former married couple whose lives become entangled (again) under the most unusual circumstances. Gail and Sean's marriage ended many years ago due to disloyalty and turbulence in their union. Gail was always the more grounded and mature one in their relationship, while Sean has always been a man-child struggling to grow up. They both married other people and are equally unhappy in their respective marriages. Yet, twenty-six years later, they encounter one another as passengers boarding the same flight. A family crisis brings them into each other's orbit. Will these two former lovers rekindle their passion and seize the opportunity for a second chance? Will Gail and Sean finally gain the closure they both desperately need?

The Two Olive Martini offers a thought-provoking and eye-opening exploration of the multifaceted aspects of family relationships and the profound journey each family member undergoes while jointly working through the challenges they encounter as a unit. The characters are well-portrayed, making it easy to become invested in their distinct storylines. Lance T. Weil does an incredible job of painting Gail as a strong and capable woman and Sean as a flawed but realistically represented man, nonetheless. I identified with these two remarkable characters a great deal. Their hopes, fears, shortcomings, and compelling realities held me captivated from beginning to end. Reading this intriguing narrative was like taking a private glimpse at the complexities of human connections and the authentic highs and lows that sometimes accompany those interactions. Fans of dramatic, character-driven novels are sure to relish this read.

The Two Olive Martini by Lance T. Weil is an exploration of relationships and the importance of discovering purpose and direction in life. Gail is a nurse, unhappy in her second marriage to Dick, a pastor without a church, whose moral imperatives seem to bear little relationship to his actions in life and their marriage. More and more, Gail finds herself pining for and dreaming about her first love, her first husband Sean, whose unforgivable traits at the time were his excessive drinking and constant philandering. Despite this, Gail remembers the emotional and physical connections and passion they shared. Sean, a lawyer, also finds himself sad and reminiscing about his time with Gail, as he suffers from some severe health issues. Little do either of them realize they are now living in the same area. Is there a possibility they could reconnect and rekindle the passion they once felt for each other?

The Two Olive Martini is a powerful, character-driven novel that will make readers think and consider their own choices in life. Author Lance T. Weil has created two strong, independent, and flawed characters, Gail and Sean, who nonetheless struggle to find happiness in their lives and who have both made poor decisions and taken wrong paths. I appreciated the idea that even after all the time that had passed, they were still both powerfully drawn back to the memories of the good times they shared, and that with the benefit of hindsight, they could see that their original love and passion for each other was the true sustaining factor of their relationship. I loved how the author was able to seamlessly weave all their peripheral relationships and entanglements into a cohesive plot that included some unlikely yet still believable serendipities. By creating a series of overlapping and adventure-filled story arcs, the novel becomes more than just a romantic, relationship-focused narrative. Ultimately, though, it is a timeless love story with flawed but lovable characters that will appeal to the true romantic in us all. I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.
