Four years have passed since Elena ‘Ellie’ Cole learnt more about her bloodline and survived the attack from her family's ancient enemy, the Venators. She’s living her life peacefully with Uncle Jo, Aunt Lily and Magi, focusing on getting a scholarship that would help pay her remaining college tuition. But Julian the Venator is back, which means another threat is coming. This time the enemy is the Vaga, otherwise known as the Dark Sword, an ancient force ruled by the immortal Erebus.
The Vaga (The Kuthun, Book II) by S.A. Carter is a great read and an improvement on the first book. With Julian’s return, Ellie struggles to comprehend her feelings toward a man that should be hated for nearly killing her and Magi four years ago. Carter maintains her engaging prose and effectively blends the element of romance and its complexity into this second book. She captures Ellie’s emotional maturity in trying to protect her loved ones and bear the responsibility as Isis’s vessel to bring forth the child of light.
The pacing of the story is good, and so is the character development, in particular Ellie's. A shapeshifter is added to the cast, who brings the best and the worst out of Phoebe, Ellie’s witty best friend who never fails to bring humor to the story. The plot moves efficiently, with action scenes that aren't over the top. The Vaga isn’t a standalone, so readers must read the first book, The Kuthun, to immerse themselves in Elena Cole’s world. Book II ends with a cliffhanger, but of course there’s Book III in the works.
