The Vampire's Pet is a fantasy romance novella by Danielle Paquette-Harvey. The Queen has reinstated the old vampire laws in the city of Ichoryllia, and humans are now allowed to be kept as pets and even bred on farms. Aleksander, a 215-year-old vampire, comes from a long line of piano makers and repairers. He feels a deep-seated sense of desolate weariness while walking the streets, and it leads him to acquire a human pet from one of the stores. The pet, Esmeralda, possesses a sort of defiance that appeals to Aleksander. He learns she belonged to a community of werewolf witches but was born without the wolf gene or magic. After he saves her from a rogue vampire, Aleksander and Esmeralda develop mutual feelings for each other. However, the wolves want Esmeralda back.
Short and engaging, The Vampire's Pet is a quick, breezy read that will entertain supernatural romance lovers. If you enjoy stories featuring vampires and werewolves, the Blood and Kisses Chronicles series is tailor-made for you. Danielle Paquette-Harvey has written an absorbing love story with a supernatural flair. The author wastes no time in dropping the reader into the story, presenting a captivating narrative in a few pages. It doesn't take long for the reader to get invested in Aleksander and Esmeralda as characters. Despite their different backgrounds, the two complement each other as Esmeralda's fortitude and defiance offer a nice foil to Aleksander's apathetic attitude toward life. I also enjoyed the introduction of Esmeralda's family and the relationship dynamics among the wolf clan. Fantasy romance fans are in for a treat with this book!
