Author Biography

Cory Putman Oakes was born in Basel, Switzerland, but grew up in Novato, California and attended Marin Catholic High School. She then spent three fantastic years at the University of California at Los Angele before graduating in 2001 with a B.A. in Psychology. In 2004, Cory graduated from Cornell Law School with a Juris Doctorate Degree and her husband, Mark (the first was the intended consequence of attending the school, the second was a bonus). Since then, she has been an associate at a big law firm, taught business law to undergraduates at Texas State University and written several books for young people.

Cory now lives in Austin, Texas with Mark and their beautiful daughter, Sophia. In addition to writing, Cory enjoys reading, cooking, running, and hanging out with her family and pets.

THE VEIL is Cory’s first published work.

What if you were shown how to lift the thin barrier that separates our world from a secret and magical civilization that exists alongside ours, but this knowledge endangers not only yourself, but everyone you love? It is Addy’s seventeenth birthday, and the mundane and quiet life she has with her Grandmother is about to be turned upside down. When Addy starts seeing glowing, silver colored creatures that no one else can see appear out of nowhere, she begins to worry that she is losing her mind. As she soon finds out, that is the least of her problems. Although she doesn’t remember her parents, the secret world of the Annorasi remembers her all too well, and not all the Annorasi are happy to learn that she knows their secret. Aided by her grandmother and a fellow student Luc, Addy must survive long enough to convince the Annorasi that she can keep their secret.

This is a lovely, well-written and unique young adult, paranormal romance books. While Luc tries to protect Addy from the worst, Addy is determined to protect her friends. I like to meet female characters who have a backbone, and Addy certainly does! She is brave and sincere and her internal dialogue is amusing and honest, with just enough snarky comments to be funny without being obnoxious. The characters are intriguing, and there is enough mystery and suspense to keep a reader hooked. I highly recommend this for readers of young adult fiction who want a light and enjoyable read.
