Silviya Rankova, the author of The Very Stubborn Camel, knows a lot about camels. She has a page at the end of the book with a list of nifty details about camels: how strong they are, how fast they travel, how much water they can drink, and other fascinating facts. The story, too, is filled with interesting facts about camels and other creatures who live in the desert. The illustrations by Alexander Petkov show that he knows lots about camels too. But this book isn’t about camels as a species. It’s the tale of one very stubborn camel named Pete whose stubbornness made lots of people happy, and even saved a life. It all started when Pete’s owner loaded him up with goods and rode him through the hot dry desert to the market. Things were going fine until Pete decided he didn’t want to go to the noisy marketplace. He turned down a different street and stopped in front of a broken-down house. When he refused to move, Pete’s owner learned that having a disobedient, stubborn camel was far more rewarding than he expected.

So many books are written to encourage children and animals to be obedient, so it’s nice to find one that rewards disobedience for a change. Everybody in this story benefits from Pete’s simple act of doing what he wants instead of what his owner wants. Pete’s sit-down strike gave all the humans he interacted with a chance to be their best selves. Yes, The Very Stubborn Camel by Silviya Rankova depends on coincidences and luck, both good and bad. But those are part of life and the story’s message – that good luck follows good deeds - is a message I support. I recommend this book to camel lovers and to families that want to teach their children to think for themselves.
