In S.L. Beaumont's The War Photographers, while viewing video footage of a protesting crowd in Leipzig, East Germany, Mae, Rachel's grandmother, noticed a group of uniformed police officers standing on a first-floor balcony. Mae found it hard to accept that she had just seen the man who killed her husband, Jack Knight. Mae was employed at Bletchley Park as a code breaker in 1943 when she fell in love with and married Jack, a war photographer from New Zealand. Jack had evidence of a British double agent giving information to a Soviet officer. Rachel traveled to East Germany to look for the officer who had killed her grandfather and became embroiled in the uprising there. Drawn to a charming activist she met, Rachel races against time to expose a traitor with his help.
The history of World War II and the fall of the Berlin Wall are woven into this historical mystery by S.L. Beaumont. The War Photographers was a roller coaster ride of murder, betrayal, bombs, and romance. The story was fast-paced, and the suspense kept me on the edge of my seat. I had a hard time putting the book down because it was so engaging. The chapters, which switched back and forth between Mae and Rachel, were so captivating that I was eager to learn more about them both. The characters were authentic and relatable. Mae and Rachel had a unique bond, and even after all these years, Mae was still incredibly in love with Jack. This well-written story had my attention from start to finish. The amazing turn of events that occurred in the end caught me off guard.
