When Irene, a young girl in her early teens, moves across the world to Normandy, the rugged beauty of the land captivates her. She loves everything about it, including a handsome local named Ishmael. However, a local toy maker has a dark and mysterious past, one that might break the town and everyone in it! With a story as twisted and captivating as the very characters themselves, Carlos Ruiz Zafon has struck gold with his third book in the Shadows series. While I did wish that I had more background into the story, this being the third book, I was easily able to slip into the story and get lost in the mystery and intrigue fit for a YA audience.

The narrator of the audio book version of Watcher in the Shadows was simply exquisite. Such a clear, lyrical quality of voice. It was absolutely wonderful. I almost did a double take when I learned that this book was first written in Spanish. It made sense, because of the Spanish exclamations and phrases that really set the tone of the novel towards dark and romantic. At the same time, it has been translated so well that there was no thought in my mind that it didn't originate in an English-speaking country. That is the mark of an excellent translator. A great read with wonderful characters.
