After what Tom Berte went through a few years back, he and his family have settled into life in a small upstate New York skiing town on Castle Ridge. Tom is no longer the Deputy Attorney General; he now has a small legal practice in town. His idyllic life is rocked, however, when, on his morning ski run, he is attacked and left for dead. Thankfully, he was rescued and went back to practicing law. His primary client, Faith McReynolds, who is the mayor of Castle Ridge and also owns the mountain and the ski center, is being pressured by a mysterious group known as Phoenix Holdings to sell the mountain and everything included for 500 million dollars. She refuses to sell, and then bad things start to happen. The ski lift turret malfunctions, sending dozens of skiers to their deaths; it then catches on fire, burning people alive. Tom starts to wonder if his attack is also connected. What he discovers terrifies him. Phoenix Holdings is a terrorist organization with plans to poison the drinking water of a major US city. Can Tom prevent this from happening? Read The Winter Verdict by Dan Buzzetta to find out.

The Winter Verdict is book two in the series, and the events of book one have left emotional scars on Tom, which he carries over into this story. Book two can be read as a standalone, but having the backstory does help. I love narratives that mix multiple genres, and this book does it in spades. It’s a legal, environmental, and political thriller, as well as an action/adventure and a mystery all rolled into one. It got to the point where I couldn’t put it down and read well into the night to finish it, and I’m glad I did. The edge-of-your-seat action is absolutely page-turning. Tom Berte is the hero that you want to keep cheering for, and boy, did Dan Buzzetta put his protagonist through the wringer. I loved every second of this book and anxiously await book three.
