The Z Tailgate: The Sequel to the Burning Z is a horror story by Clive Riddle that puts zombies at a football game, specifically, an Oakland Raider tailgate party. If you don’t know football, the Oakland Raider fans are crazy. Their colors are silver and black and they dress up as part pirates and part marauders. They are scary, oftentimes wear masks, and will sometimes depict death in their costumes. Obviously, the perfect place for zombies to hang out. The main characters, Alan and Conner, visit a cruise ship because they’ve heard of a possible zombie outbreak. Conner’s girlfriend, Cassie, the third main character, Bruce, and a truck full of zombies are kidnapped. Everyone begins searching for the truck, which ultimately ends up in the parking lot of the Oakland Coliseum on game day. When the zombies escape the truck, the worst possible thing happens. They crash the tailgate parties and the biggest battle scene ever takes place in the Coliseum parking lot.
As a football fan (whose favorite team is the Oakland Raiders), I absolutely loved The Z Tailgate! Clive Riddle was so creative to write a story about zombies who get into a fight at a sporting event. While zombies have been written about in a number of ways, no one was creative enough to think to put them in a sports arena (with crazy, drunk fans). I commend Riddle for that. And picking the football team with the most insane, possibly violent fans is just pure genius! This story is fun, the zombies are wild, and the football fans steal the show. Go Raiders!
