Through Hell & Highwater is a young adult novel by Victoria Liiv that is perfect for teen readers who enjoy adventurous fantasy and a wide range of unique characters. At Volo Noscere, the University of Magic in Rome, Professor Eyorn is gathering together a team of students for a special mission. The usual group of brave, if somewhat reckless, students volunteer, including a shifter, a werewolf, a demon, and a vampire. But the group is not yet complete without Evyline, the first-year elf who is great at protective spells but has no desire to cause harm to others. Though the students don’t know the exact reason for the quest, they suspect that the massive fires and other natural disasters around the globe may be an attack on the magical world specifically.
Victoria Liiv has taken the multiple stories of a variety of characters and woven them together to create the magical world that lies within the pages of Through Hell & Highwater. In a fast-paced, action-packed sequence of events, there is no time to pause as the first few months of the interesting year at the university fly by. With the presence of every magical creature imaginable, the point of view switches multiple times to follow many different characters and their complex relationships with each other. Friendships, lessons, outcasts, secret crushes, mysterious enchantments, and more fill the pages from start to finish. As the first book in the series, there is certain to be more to this magical adventure that I can’t wait to read.
