Through the Garden Gate by Sharon Rose follows Miles, a young boy who expects a slow, boring summer's day. But his mom talks him into going next door to help Miss Mary in her garden. He isn’t too excited at first, but the thought of eating pie and seeing Miss Mary's dog eventually wins him over. While working in the garden, he learns a lot about plants and how to identify invasive crabgrass. That's when he notices a mysterious gate behind the poppy patch. He goes through the gate, finding a magical garden full of giant flowers, fairies, and animals that can talk. Miles is in for another big surprise. When the crabgrass threatens to cause harm to the magical plants, it is up to Miles to act fast. At one point, a muddy bog forms, and he has to team up with his new pals to deal with this problem creatively. Will he be brave enough to handle challenges he never imagined before?
What's great about Through the Garden Gate is how masterfully Sharon Rose blends gardening lessons with a fun, magical adventure. The world feels alive, from pollinators and soil to fairies and talking trees. Miles grows in more ways than just courage. He begins learning patience, teamwork, and how to identify the little details that contribute to a garden's growth. Erin Brown's illustrations breathe life into each page. They help young readers to form a deeper connection to the story as it unfolds. Blending science with a bit of magic keeps the story interesting. It shows children how being curious and brave can make life very exciting. In the end, it's a captivating tale where simple chores become fun, working together makes things easier, and small creatures share meaningful lessons. I happily recommend it to children, parents, and other caregivers.
