Thurman the Thief by Annabelle Yim is a delightful children’s book about a mysterious little thief who likes to steal children’s toys, puzzles, and often irreplaceable parts that are needed to enjoy these toys. Thurman is a hide-and-seek expert who is never seen but strikes over and over when he finds unattended toys lying on the floor, strewn over the furniture, left piled up on the sofa, dining table, and other unexpected places. He has his hiding places that kids never find and watches gleefully as they search all over the house to play with the incomplete toys. He enjoys listening to kids as they cry in frustration, accuse each other, and run to their parents for help. The parents are no help either; they just scold their kids for leaving their toys all over the place instead of putting them away as they are supposed to do. Thurman enjoys all the attention his mischief generates but this joy is short-lived as the reader finds out at the end.
Thurman the Thief by Annabelle Yim is a playful tale suggesting to young readers that putting their toys away at the end of the day is a good idea to avoid frustration and spoiled fun. The illustrations by the author are well-done and often funny, underlining the message that young children often hear but seldom listen to. The most important lesson they can learn from this fun book is that problems are never solved by complaining and blaming each other but by listening to adults, thinking, and finding real solutions. I am sure young readers would enjoy this book and learn in an entertaining way to cope with their problems and realize that Thurman will be watching for new opportunities to make mischief. I highly recommend this book for parents of preschool children.
