To Outwit Them All by Peggy Wirgau offers readers an interesting, fresh look at what might have been. This delightful tale delivers a fictionalized account of the mysterious secret agent 355. History confirms the existence of one such member of The Culper Ring, an elite spy ring that answered directly to General George Washington during the Revolutionary War. To Outwit Them All takes readers along for the ride and asks the question, what if? The research is well done, and the vivid details throughout the story deliver an unforgettable and riveting narrative, presenting historical facts in a fun and engaging way. Sharing a mix of factual people and fictional characters, the story takes readers through an emotional time in United States history, and details the events leading up to a decisive shift in the Revolutionary War.

To Outwit Them All by Peggy Wirgau has a little of everything from romance and action to spies and sudden twists that kept me guessing until the end. I loved reading Betty’s story, and while I knew a little about John Andre’s role in historical events, I was pleased that this dramatic tale held me in suspense. The characters were entertaining and kept the story moving at a good pace. I especially loved that it was inspired by a true story and a real person, even if her name remains unknown. That just added to the sense of mystery, which I adored. Wirgau has a beautiful writing style that shines in the story. To Outwit Them All is the perfect title for this book, and I enjoyed seeing that theme play out as Betty’s story unfolds. The action, mystery, and secrets kept the narrative moving at a good pace and captured my attention from the very beginning.
