To the Revival Generation: Gospel-Centered Reflections on Faith for Christian Teens & Young Adults by Russ Allen is a collection of essays drawn from the author’s 15 years in student ministry, aimed at amplifying spiritual development among younger Christians. Through it, he demonstrates a broader revival movement among youth, leaning into personal transformation through faith. The essays include, but are in no way limited to, A Dog at the Master’s Table, in which Allen contrasts outward religiosity with true spiritual shaping; Christian Hypocrites talks about the visibility of moral failure and the Gospel’s call to humility; Starvation of the Wealthy critiques the neglect of scripture despite easy access, urging daily engagement; and The Good News of Suffering, with Allen speaking on how pain reveals moral awareness and connects believers to Christ’s own suffering.

Russ Allen's writing throughout To the Revival Generation is wonderfully conversational and has an accessibility that feels like a chat with a trusted advisor. He covers a wide range of subjects that are all scripture-based and can be applied to contemporary issues. Among the many pieces, my favorites are the essay So, You Struggle with Sin? which gives a straightforward and promotive approach to honesty within faith communities, leaning into the power of confession, prayer, and support. The short story The Creatures of Aletheia stood out as well, mixing suspense and symbolism in a tale of an FBI agent making an incredible discovery in a room that reflects more than he could have ever imagined. Allen’s ability to switch between clear, direct prose and the relevant scripture feels genuine, and overall, his compilation is a worthwhile read for those seeking a refreshing take on the difficulties of youth in one volume. Very highly recommended.
