Tower in the Stars (Torre en las estrellas) by Laura Carolfi is a children’s illustrated picture book about life and death. Tower is an older dog, and he is there when Tiny is born. I liken Tower to a grandfather figure, in his later years when the younger is born. Tower loves the young Tiny, and they cultivate a strong relationship, spending many hours together throughout Tiny’s young and impressionable years. Yet there comes a time when Tower realizes he is dying and must tell his young friend. He explains that his body will not work for much longer and that he will soon be gone. But he offers comfort to Tiny, saying he will be in the stars, accessible to Tiny even after he is absent.
This touching story is meant to comfort a child when someone dear dies. For those whose native language is English, it serves as a tool for learning Spanish, as each English sentence is followed by its Spanish counterpart. The artwork by Ryan Konzelman is colorful and fun, focusing on the story's essential elements and emphasizing the relationship between Tower and Tiny. And yes, Tiny does go through a mourning period, but the story also shows how to remember the good times and honor them. Tower in the Stars by Laura Carolfi takes the difficult subject of death and brings it into focus so that a young reader can better deal with the reality in his or her own way. I highly recommend it.
