Scotty Weems along with his best friends, Jason and Pete, are trapped inside the high school building after a powerful nor'easter comes their way. Two other boys and two girls, awaiting a parental pick-up which never comes, are also trapped. They are supervised by the assistant football coach until he sets out to find help for the group.

Conditions go from bad to worse as the building loses power, and the snow continues to build. Cell phones are useless, and precious warmth is available for the small group of stranded students.

The group begins to divide, each with an agenda to survive. When it becomes apparent that help is simply not available, one of the group goes to the shop to make a rudimentary snowmobile. As the group struggles to survive, one of the students volunteers to go for help and then, another goes to rescue that student.

All in all, this is a thought-provoking story for young readers and it will generally hold the interest of boys and girls alike. The plot is well-developed, and the characters are diverse and believable. The book contains no violence or profanity which would exclude the general population of young readers.
