"Trust No One" by Mike Thompson is the sequel to "Blood Betrayal" in which the reader first met Wolf Magnussen and his dysfunctional family. Wolf's brother is not in prison. Wolf has lost everything and is pretty much in seclusion until his old friend Sheriff Bill invites him to drive to Las Vegan to attend a poker game in which a friend is participating. Along the way, they get into trouble and manage to squeeze out of it just in time to make it to the tournament. Naturally, there is trouble galore in Vegas when the friend is murdered and Wolf and his older brother Sasha end up being kidnap victims. Sheriff Bill seems to be in and out of the frays and his role in the whole murder/kidnapping scheme appears to be elusive, although he does seem to have Wolf's best interests at heart. Wolf is tormented by flashbacks and hallucinations which at times render him useless and at other times seem to spur him toward action to keep himself from harm's way.
Thompson has a fascinating background which allows him to build characters and scenes so as to keep the reader in suspense. In this novel, he goes back and forth in time and this is sometimes disruptive to the flow of the story. The character of Wolf is well-maintained throughout the story and the reader will be rooting for Wolf's safety and resolution of personal issues until the last page. Thompson gives the reader an uncomfortable but realistic view into the underworld of Sin City and most readers will love the twists and turns of the plot.
