Liz Wanic’s Under Cover of Chaos, written with Rebekah Wanic, follows Stella Fairmont, a UN staff member arriving in Bangui for her first field mission in the Central African Republic. Soon after landing, Stella encounters the body of a murdered young woman and learns that similar deaths have unsettled the city. Rumors point to foreign personnel, yet the local investigation offers few answers. The case touches an old wound for Stella, whose childhood friend vanished years earlier, so she starts asking questions inside a mission where private lives disappear behind curfews and compound walls. When another victim turns out to be someone linked to her circle, Stella begins watching the surrounding men with suspicion. Every new detail seems to narrow possibilities, but Bangui is a place where appearances can shift quickly, and certainty can become dangerous.
Liz Wanic’s Under Cover of Chaos, with Rebekah Wanic, is outstanding international thriller fiction. Stella is a fantastic lead, with her refusal to be intimidated perfectly shown when Amjad tries to blame her for damage to her own parked truck. I love Philippe, Stella’s UN colleague, whose friendship feels natural when he stops Stella from rushing toward a scream outside White City until armed officers check the gate. The authors are excellent at turning movement through Bangui into danger, as a motorcycle accident leaves Stella trapped inside a UN vehicle under rocks hurled by a crowd. Bangui itself is superbly drawn, especially on the Ubangi River, where a boat trip brings the startling sight of two little girls standing beside a machete nearly their height. Well written and full of incredible twists, readers who enjoy international thrillers with mystery will adore this.
