Unexpected Detour by Lynn Marie Jackson unfolds in America during the early 1940s. Faye, the main character, resides in Chicago with her family and is eagerly getting ready to marry her fiancé, Steve. Unfortunately, in light of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Steve enlists in the army, prompting Faye to travel to California to wed him before he ships out. After working as an executive secretary for an engineering firm, Faye is recruited as a courier for a government intelligence agency in San Francisco. Her role is to transport classified documents on behalf of her employer. Faye notices something amiss with the documents temporarily entrusted to her care. She stumbles upon a colossal cover-up that potentially endangers not only her life but the life of her friend.

Intriguing from beginning to end, Unexpected Detour is a truly unique novel that offers an intimate portrayal of a woman poised at the crossroads of her life. It is a poignantly written and well-researched historical novel that weaves a tale of survival and bravery. Lynn Marie Jackson masterfully depicts Faye's riveting journey as a woman driven to play a crucial part in the war efforts where many brave Americans have died defending their country. Through Faye's experiences and encounters, Jackson intricately explores concepts like prejudice, racism, self-sacrifice, resilience, and patriotism. Even though the narrative is fictional, the characters are very much authentic and well-fleshed out. If you're a fan of historical fiction that illustrates the courage and solidarity of women during World War II, this novel will hold your attention from start to finish.
