Charles Baxter once said, “Forget art. Put your trust in ice cream.” In Unicorns Love Ice Cream: Mythical Feasts by Ben Okon, that’s exactly what some unicorns do. Set in a whimsical world where unicorns crave more than just magic, they love ice cream in every flavor imaginable. Young readers are invited to discover why they are so obsessed with the treat in this rhyming and playful adventure. They race through rainbows, chase shooting stars, and find ways to beat the heat with every creamy scoop, but they also have an unexpected fear. Will they let that fear take over? This story celebrates creativity, introduces a dash of wordplay, and serves up a charming tale that blends humor with heart.
As a lover of these mystical creatures, I think Unicorns Love Ice Cream is an absolute pleasure to read aloud or explore on one's own. As an educator, I found the bouncy rhymes and clever word choices to be an excellent way for children to build their vocabulary, all while having fun and encountering some tricky words. There’s a lively energy to Ben Okon’s writing that makes every magical mishap vivid and genuinely funny. Komal Sharma’s imaginative illustrations bring the enchantment to life, filling the story with color, warmth, and delight. After reading, it could be extended with conversations on favorite ice cream flavors, making lists of new words, or drawing the part students loved best. The section at the end, called 'Food for Thought,' discusses trying something new. This is a wonderful picture book that sparks laughter and may even inspire a craving for ice cream. So, as someone once said, “Always be yourself, unless you can be a unicorn. Then always be a unicorn,” or in this case, be an ice cream-loving one.
