A murder-suicide is just the beginning of a family's journey into each other's betrayal and hidden secrets in the thrilling murder mystery Unknown Assailant: A Dr. Pepper Hunt Mystery by J. L. Doucette. Dr. Pepper Hunt is a Forensic Psychologist, and when Mrs. Bella Sanderson's lawyer suspects her mental acuity is waning and affecting her decision in her legal affairs, he refers her to Pepper. Several months later, Bella's son and wife (Dan and Heather) are discovered shot to death in their home. Unable to ascertain whether their deaths are murder-suicide or just simply murder, Detective Antelope asks Pepper to assist him in the investigation. As Pepper meets with the suspects and Dan and Heather's family members, hidden secrets start emerging. When other deaths within the family come to light, the case takes on a new perspective. Is it possible one of Sanderson's family skeletons is the cause of their demise?

Suspense abounds in the dramatic novel, Unknown Assailant by J. L. Doucette. Compelling and intense, it is a sensational murder mystery that engages the reader from the first page. Impeccably written, the story has so many twists, I couldn't discern the villain and kept waiting for the ax to fall. The escalating apprehension within the storyline held me captivated and had me flipping pages deep into the wee hours of the morning. The story kept me guessing who the murderer was until I reached the story's climactic denouement. The tragedy that encompasses the Sanderson family culminates into an unexpected and shocking outcome that left me stunned. Although this is the third book in a series, it does perfectly well as a standalone and leaves the reader wanting more.
