Unleashed Redemption by David Mendoza is a memoir that details his personal journey from a disciplined childhood in South Texas to a life of faith. Mendoza’s military service in the Marine Corps, shaped by values instilled by his father and grandmother, marked his early adulthood. After struggling with civilian life, he found a path in law enforcement, first as a detention officer and later as a K9 handler. His hardships included financial, emotional, and issues with alcohol. A transformative encounter with a sheriff's deputy led him to rediscover his faith. Over time, he became a deacon, a Sunday school teacher, and later, a pastor. Mendoza’s faith guided him through career setbacks and leadership roles. Throughout his life, he has relied on spiritual lessons and divine guidance, finding purpose in serving God and helping others.
David Mendoza’s Unleashed Redemption: A K9 Handler's Story of Hope & Healing offers a clear and accessible look into Mendoza's life and a very real arc that has a satisfying endpoint. The writing is straightforward and simple, allowing readers to easily follow his journey. Mendoza’s conversational style is one of the book's strengths and a sense of connection occurs naturally. I appreciated the issues he shared concerning becoming a new father, which are candid and relatable. I think this is something a lot of men feel but few are comfortable talking about. Unleashed Redemption is an unequivocally faith-based memoir and the book will resonate with readers who are drawn to Christian memoirs that discuss trust in God through difficult circumstances. The greatest beneficiaries of this memoir, however, will be Mendoza's family, who will no doubt treasure this slice of their family history for generations to come.
