Unprotected Love by John F. Rooney will thrill fans of Dt. Denny Delaney. Delaney has become a favorite with admirers of crime/thriller plots. This is Rooney’s fifth book staring Delaney. In this book Rooney tackles the subject of male gay prostitutes.

A serial killer is on the loose and Dt. Denney Delaney is hot on the trail. The killer is targeting young male hustlers. They are laid out as if in a coffin, along the docks, with an unopened condom stuffed in their mouth. Delaney is quickly drawn into the investigation and seems to have a more personal interest than the usual crime. Delaney turns to his wife Monny for assistance. She is a blogger and becomes an important part of the investigation. The investigation leads Delaney to several interesting characters: Jake Sigman, Jumbo Jolly, and Tim. Tim plays an important part in this story. He is a young gay man that contacts Delaney. Eventually they meet face to face. Delaney is concerned with Tim’s safety however there seems to be more to their bond.

There are several sub plots in this book they keep the pace moving along nicely. This is a great thriller sure to please fans. It has enough twists and turns to make a pretzel. I do have one criticism. The scenes that concern the Delaney’s socializing or his past lost my interest. They slowed the pace and seemed like filler. Rooney is a master at dialogue. He is unafraid of tackling controversial contemporary issues. Well done.
