US-China Relations in the Twenty-First Century: The Politics of Confrontation versus the Politics of Competitive Coexistence by Chandan Kamble is a deep dive into the continuity between the United States and China, homing in on the economic ties, security issues, and historical factors that influence their relationship. Kamble talks about the strategic environment in the Asia-Pacific, including the roles of the US, China, and Japan. He speaks on China’s approach to territorial claims in regions such as the South China Sea and the Korean Peninsula, and how these actions affect regional conditions. Kamble compares views that prioritize power competition with those favoring cooperation, explaining the policies adopted by both nations. Kamble then offers policy recommendations to address the changes in international influence and regional control.

US-China Relations in the Twenty-First Century by Chandan Kamble is a clear and well-written thesis that employs precise data and quantifiable evidence in a strong and authoritative presentation. Kamble maintains balance by neither idealizing nor demonizing any party, recognizing China’s role as both a participant in liberal institutions and a realist power with territorial aims. I really like the nod to Raymond Aron as Kamble's way of tempering the “might is right” perspective, and that power alone doesn’t define greatness. The writing itself is structured and flows smoothly, so readers are comfortably guided through historical context, strategic ideas, and current alliances. While I do not fully agree with all of Kamble’s views, namely, on the China-Pakistan-India segment, and which of the two latter countries should be more closely aligned to the former, his approach remains respectful and non-argumentative. Overall, this is an articulate and accessible geopolitical work for those looking to flex their brains a bit on international politics.
