Statmour is barely surviving freshman year at Landview Classical Academy when he stumbles onto something the adults have no idea exists. That's where Victory Syllabus by Dean Ware picks up, introducing readers to Travelling, an underground sport played on old, abandoned tennis courts using a basketball and the Map, an incredibly precise rulebook. It's ruled over by Mr. Vastville, the biggest, most intimidating kid at school, who's never lost a match. Statmour has his own reasons for wanting to get good at the game fast. After some rough starts, he begins training hard and studying the game with real determination. As the school's tournament heats up, he has to face tougher opponents, all building toward one thing: a shot at finally taking on Vastville himself.
Victory Syllabus by Dean Ware is a fast, funny read, and it never takes itself too seriously even during the more competitive matches. Dean's art carries a lot of the humor, from the exaggerated faces to the loud, punchy sound effects on every big play. The pacing moves quickly from the first day of school right through to the tournament, and the matches themselves are drawn with real energy, with quick cuts and dynamic angles that keep the action easy to follow even at full speed. Statmour starts awkward and unsure of himself, but watching him figure out how to study his opponents and use their weaknesses against them makes his progress fun to follow. There are a few nice twists along the way too, especially in how the final match plays out, with more riding on how Statmour plays than on who actually wins. Kids who love sports stories with plenty of laughs and a hero worth cheering for will really enjoy this one.
