Author Biography

Nicholas Varner enjoyed a long career teaching students and athletes from diverse cultural backgrounds. His students and athletes shared their stories and dreams for the future, teaching Nicholas many valuable lessons. He was voted Southern Arizona Coach of the Year several times, building teams of young people from places as far apart as Bosnia and Somalia, one of whom still holds the Afghan men’s 800-meter record. As with most writers, Nicholas draws upon the landscapes and peoples which have had the greatest influence on him. As a young boy, he was heavily influenced by an Apache friend of his father’s named Bill Russell. Apache Bill took Nicholas and others on long walks in the desert, pointing out pot sherds and arrowheads left by “the Old Ones.” And Bill would make his bicep twitch, explaining he had trapped a frog there and would let it out when the rains came. This novel is not meant to be an accurate depiction of any culture or belief. The important values that drive the novel were taught by Nicholas’ parents, Apache Bill, the O’odham, and other indigenous peoples of the southwest. The smattering of Spanish pays homage to Mexican friends whose families have made the southwest their home for generations. Nicholas, his wife Kate, and their two Malamutes now live in the mountains of the Gila National Forest in New Mexico.

Nicholas Varner’s Warriors of the Red Wolf is a beautiful, captivating young adult novel that immerses readers in a vibrant, mythical world influenced by legends and the timeless battle between good and evil. The story unfolds through the voice of Uncle Ho-e, whose storytelling transports readers into the lives of a nomadic tribe seeking a new home amid trials, betrayals, and revelations. With elements of magic, loyalty, and cultural heritage, this richly woven tale will appeal to young readers and those young at heart. The narrative is framed as a story passed down to younger generations, emphasizing themes of oral tradition and the preservation of cultural identity. Ho-e’s warmth and humor as a storyteller balance the intensity of the challenges faced by the tribe. Central to the plot is Mia, a gifted young leader who embodies resilience and wisdom as she interprets the whispers of the Sacred Wind. Her journey, alongside characters like Tumas the healer, the comical yet courageous Ho-e, and loyal canines Yoni and Yote, adds depth and relatability to the epic quest.

The imagery is striking, painting landscapes of arid deserts, lush grasslands, and towering mountains with poetic prose. Nicholas Varner skillfully explores universal themes such as the cost of greed, the value of unity, and the sacrifices made for the greater good. While grounded in folklore, the story also conveys timely messages about humanity’s connection to nature and the importance of trust and community. The pacing, world-building, plot, and character development are well-drawn, and Varner excels at weaving mythical worlds deeply rooted in cultural traditions and oral storytelling. Warriors of the Red Wolf will appeal to readers of Le Guin, Momaday, and anyone who enjoys a good book with poetic prose and vivid imagery. It’s a timeless book to pass down the generations and an excellent addition to middle school libraries.

Warriors of the Red Wolf by Nicholas Varner is a stunning book that delves deeply into the mysticism, magic, and lore that is such an integral part of Indigenous populations worldwide. The Warriors of the Hilltop are fierce and proud people who want to live in peace and grow their families in a land where good triumphs over evil. Forced from their homeland, Mia and her tribe seek a new land in which to settle. Guided by her wind chimes and the tribe’s courage and determination, they face many dangers and evil creatures on their epic journey but they also encounter new friends and allies and reconnect with many of their past family and friends. Tasked with ridding the world of an evil that threatens humanity, Mia and her comrades must make sacrifices and lose family members in an epic battle for control of the Blue Pearl that is Earth.

Warriors of the Red Wolf is a sequel novel to Seasons of the Blue Pearl but it is definitely a standalone story. Author Nicholas Varner does a superb job of dropping gems of background information into the narrative to ensure that readers are kept apprised of the plot and its origins. What I particularly appreciated was the highly descriptive, thoughtful, and contemplative nature of much of the narrative, especially as Mia and others spent time communing with their spirit animals, ancestors, and the Sacred Wind that guides her decision-making. I could see the allegorical nature of the tribe’s desire for peace, prosperity, and family contrasted with the evil power’s desire for control and possession. I found myself constantly comparing the tribe’s battles to those of the Native Americans as they sought to preserve their culture and way of life against the relentless thrust of the European settlers for land, control, and dominance. Although the novel is deep, thoughtful, and contemplative, there is no shortage of action, fighting, and loss for all participants in this journey. This is a well-balanced, carefully structured, and enthralling novel that will captivate the hearts and minds of readers. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.
