Aelth Faye presents another standalone installment of the Fairytale Hour series with a retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid. Wave Dancer tells the story of Niya, the youngest daughter of the underwater empire, which has been suffering due to the acts of the landers. When Niya rescues a prince and his companion from a sinking ship during a storm, she makes a deal to marry the man in hopes of forming an alliance that will save her people. She seeks help from the sea witch so that she may join the landers and secure the deal. When the sea witch takes her voice as payment, Niya has to learn about the ways of the landers while finding alternative ways to communicate.

A quick and easy read that can be finished within an hour, Wave Dancer is a fun reimagining of the classic tale that everyone is familiar with in some form. I especially enjoyed Aelth Faye’s re-characterization of the main protagonist, Niya, who is much stronger and more mature than she is often depicted. I loved that she was so much more than just a love-struck teenager. I also found myself laughing out loud at certain parts of the story, especially when I was blindsided by an unexpected twist that completely changed my expectations. I think this version of the story makes so much more sense than either the original or even the Disney portrayal. Once again, here is another Fairytale Hour tale that is the perfect read for anyone who loves new twists to classic fairy tales.
