Weighing a Miracle by Steven Nimocks is a well-written fictional account of a familiar Bible story in which Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead. The story begins in a commercial setting along the Jericho Road, where Caleb and his two sons go about their daily activities in the warehouse. To Caleb, any truth that cannot be measured or verified through the tools his trade has taught him to trust is nonexistent. However, Caleb’s friend Lazarus fell ill, and while his sisters hoped Jesus would come in time to heal their brother, he passed on. When Jesus finally comes to Bethany, Caleb confronts an event that defies his logic, reason, and everything he has built his life upon. To him, the dead do not rise, and he will prove it.

This book left a lasting impression on me of the impossibility of God's power beyond human understanding. It also allowed me to reflect and assess myself to ascertain any area of my life where I have heavily relied on my human logic to interpret God’s power. I commend the author for the perspective he added to the story, the character development, and the engaging dialogue, which made this book interesting to read. While the story is fictional, I loved that the original meaning as recorded in the Bible was not altered. The writing is organized, well-paced, and easy to comprehend. It featured themes on faith, transformation, grief, and more. I recommend Weighing a Miracle by Steven Nimocks to all Christians and those struggling with doubt and lack of belief.

Weighing a Miracle is a historical drama by Steven Nimocks. Caleb ben Josiah is a merchant. Everything in his life revolves around scales, numbers, and his beloved ledger. When he hears some extraordinary claims about a man named Jesus, Caleb brushes them aside and continues his business as usual. Soon, however, he feels the pain of loss when his best friend, Lazarus, unexpectedly passes away. Caleb begins to help Lazarus's grieving sisters, making sure that the estate continues to function seamlessly. On the fourth day, Lazrus, whose body had been sealed inside a limestone tomb, suddenly rises from his grave and walks to his home. No amount of measuring the scales or keeping the ledger had prepared Caleb for something like this. Will he accept this miracle?

Weighing a Miracle is a thought-provoking tale about faith, family, and friendship. Inspired by biblical lore, author Steven Nimocks tells a moving story that beautifully illustrates how some things in life cannot truly be measured and must be accepted and embraced through faith. This book is primarily written for Christians. However, I think even non-Christian readers will find the narrative captivating and learn a few valuable life lessons from the story. Nimocks does a fantastic job of crafting characters you can resonate with. Caleb is a good friend and an excellent merchant, but stubborn to a fault. He struggles to understand anything that he can't quantify. Lazarus is a completely different personality. This is why their friendship is even more heartwarming. I also enjoyed the characterization of Martha and Mary. Overall, historical fiction readers are in for a treat!

In Weighing a Miracle by Steven Nimocks, Caleb is a merchant who manages a warehouse in Jerusalem with his sons. He is close friends with Lazarus of Bethany, his primary supplier of olive oil. The teachings of Jesus always move Lazarus, but Caleb has dismissed miracles as stories from travelers. Caleb receives a message that Lazarus has fallen seriously ill and is on his deathbed. He rushes to Bethany and tries to focus on practical solutions. Meanwhile, Martha and Mary place their hope in Jesus. Lazarus dies before Jesus arrives, and Caleb is overwhelmed with grief. Everything changes when rumors spread that Lazarus has walked out of the tomb alive.

Weighing a Miracle by Steven Nimocks is a biblical story, keeping to the main events in John 11:1-44. It is also the story of the man whose world of logic and calculations was shattered by the miracle performed by Jesus. The book doesn’t alter the main events that occurred in the Bible, as it narrates them steadily with descriptive details that make one feel they were there at that time. I liked that the book didn’t just focus on the miracle performed by Jesus, as most books do, and I was happy with how Caleb finally found peace by simply accepting and starting to question the limits of logic. His friendship with Lazarus feels genuine through their conversations about business, suffering, trust, and belief. The story’s themes of loss, friendship, faith, doubt, and hope are handled with care. This book is ideal for people who enjoy stories about faith, grief, and the struggle between logic and faith.
