Children absolutely love surprises, and a certain young pig is no exception. Welcome Baby Wigglet! by A.M. Berkowitz begins with young Gigglet playing in her backyard. Then her parents come outside and tell her that they have a big surprise for her. At first, she imagines so many things that it could be, like a brand-new outfit or maybe even a fun vacation. But nothing could’ve prepared her for the news that she was going to be a big sister. However, her excitement quickly turns to uncertainty as she begins to worry about how this could change her life and whether her parents would still care for her. Readers are gently taken along on her journey of processing mixed emotions and also thinking about the ups and downs of sharing attention, love, and family with her new sibling. Welcome Baby Wigglet! is an uplifting story that reminds us that while some surprises can bring challenges, they can also open the door to deeper family bonds.
As an educator, I really enjoyed reading Welcome Baby Wigglet! because I think it truly captures such a relatable moment for children, and it’s also one I’ve witnessed many times. Many children feel similarly to Gigglet and have had reactions like excitement, worry, and sometimes even anger or jealousy. In the classroom, it would be a great tool to use to spark meaningful conversations about feelings, changes in families, and the importance of showing kindness and patience when things don’t go as planned or the way they want. Teachers could also have their students do activities like drawing their favorite part of the story, writing about their own “big news” moments, or even doing role-playing on how to welcome a new sibling or friend. A.M. Berkowitz’s story belongs not only in schools, but also in homes where new babies are being expected, giving families a way to talk openly and honestly with their children about the changes ahead. Books like this remind us that even small surprises can plant the seeds for big growth in little hearts.
