Sometimes an animal seems to find the people that need it most. In Welcome Home, Mr. Crackers by Britt Davis, the Barker family is enjoying an autumn walk through the park when Claire spots something unusual near the swings: a dachshund wearing a shiny black top hat. The friendly pup doesn’t have a collar, so she and her brother Charlie have no idea where he came from or who might be looking for him. They soon discover something else about their new pal. He has very particular tastes and turns down most of the food he is offered. The one exception is saltine crackers, which get his tail wagging. The Barkers bring him home instead of leaving him alone and make posters, hoping to track down his owner. While they wait for someone to respond, the little dachshund begins settling into their daily routine and showing plenty of personality. Could this cracker-loving dog have found exactly where he belongs?

Welcome Home, Mr. Crackers by Britt Davis was such a sweet tale, and children will respond well to it. Kids love books about animals, and Mr. Crackers has enough personality to make him easy to remember. I appreciated the lesson about kindness and caring for an animal that needs help. The writing is simple to understand, while the steady pace keeps the plot moving without rushing through the important moments. I’d love to share this with my kindergarten students because we could talk about responsible dog ownership, helping lost pets, and what it means to give someone a place to belong. We would make a list of silly foods they think a pet might like. They might even design their own lost pet posters. Matt Ward’s detailed illustrations add humor and give kids plenty to notice on every page. Young readers who enjoy funny animal stories will want to meet this unusual dachshund. I can easily see this book in homes, classrooms, and libraries because its message about compassion is one kids can understand and remember.
