What Ever Happened to Anna Canneli? by Conal O’Brien is book 3 in the series, introducing many familiar characters, but it can be read as a standalone. The detectives and the private eye Bookbinder and his researcher investigate a murder and uncover politicians and corruption that reach the highest levels of government. A television station thrives due to political influence. Add to the mix a jilted lover, missing art treasures, independent bloggers, and yet another high-profile murder, and the scene is set for a high-tension scenario. We are not certain which side many of the characters are on; are they good or bad? There are secrets from the crime families in Italy and cover-ups in Washington, USA, that unravel through the pages of this excellent book, told from many different points of view.
This is a fast-paced read that races from one scene to another, and I was thankful for the character list at the back of the book. I’d advise readers to start there. The narrative also moves at a breakneck speed in scene changes, situations, and people. Yet, Conal O’Brien cleverly takes moments to describe the surroundings, whether it be rural Italy, Sicily, Vermont, or New York, with crystal clarity. I felt I was there in the moment, an observer as the tale unfolded. It’s a well-constructed narrative, and despite my not having read the first two books, the plot was easy to follow but requires concentration until you have sorted out all the many players. I liked the storyline, the nail-biting events, and cared for both good and bad characters from the start. What Ever Happened to Anna Canneli? is a satisfying read that I thoroughly enjoyed.
