What is Racism? by Terri Casey is an educational children’s picture book that follows Zoey as she learns about racism and what she can do to help combat it. When Zoey looks out her window to see a protest going on outside her house, she talks to her mom and dad about what it means. Her parents explain what racism is to her, and Zoey decides that she wants to do something about the racism that so many experience because of their skin color. She and her best friend Sasha work together to create a Kid-Action plan, helping to fight racism where they live.

This book has the opportunity to be very eye-opening, especially among young children who are growing up in a society where racism is so prevalent. The story gives power to children, showing that they can do something about it; they don’t have to be grown-up to fight racism. I thought the illustrations by Audeva Joseph were absolutely stunning and really made the story stand out. Children are sure to be drawn to the images throughout the book and hopefully learn from them along with the written words. With a format that is easy and quick to read, What is Racism? is a great book with an important message in it. What is Racism? by Terri Casey is a book that I could read multiple times, and I would recommend it to all families; I believe that parents could learn something new from this book alongside their children.

During pre-COVID we were living in our own world and at times were numb and isolated from what was happening around us. Post-COVID caused us to shelter in, sit down, and not only begin to reflect on the context of our lives but to watch different elements of what's going on in other parts of the world, both the good and bad, unfold. Over the years there have been several pivotal moments in time where blacks were victims of injustice and were being murdered at higher than normal rates. One of those pivotal moments that caused the world to pause was when George Floyd was murdered and the last scenes of his life were ended right before our eyes. It was at this moment that author Terri Casey decided to set on a path to make a change in how everyone can begin the conversations about racism and seek ways to eradicate this evil. In her children's book What is Racism? Helping Kids Understand & Take Kid-Action with beautiful illustrations by Audeva Joseph, best friends Sasha and Zoey decide to make a difference in their fight against racism by creating a Kid-Action Plan. This Plan displays how even children can get creative in making a paradigm shift against injustice. Racism is a social issue that can negatively impact and influence many.

What is Racism? Helping Kids Understand & Take Kid-Action by Terri Casey offers an excellent start for conversations pertaining to racism. Within the past few years, there have been so many blacks unjustly murdered outside of George Floyd, from Ahmad Aubrey, Daunte Wright, Botham Jean, Manuel Ellis, Andre Hill, Breonna Taylor, and Rayshard Brooks, to name a few, which have sparked protest, riots, and changing laws that incite racism or racial behavior. This book will help and challenge children to learn and understand more about the world around them, especially pertaining to those that look different than them. This difference occurs not only due to the color of their skin, but ableism, classism, sexism, and other 'isms' that can show up as well. Thank you, Terri, for creating a platform for children to discuss race now and to improve the future.
